And It Began

August 31, 2021

The first thing was to choose a font. Font surprisingly motivates me to write better–the font must be appropriate for the occasion in which I find myself writing–and because I want this writing to be, well, good…I’ve chosen a font that inspires me to write “good.” I’ve been putting off beginning this whole book writing process because while it is something I’ve wanted to do for quite some time it sounds exhausting and I have enough of that in my life right now in the form of a 6-week-old and an almost two-year-old. Most times that I’m in the “writing mood,” aka the time where I have something to say in a way that sounds worth writing down and sharing, I just let the words bounce around in my head like an echo chamber and however many hours later when I decide to attempt to write those words down the inspiration is gone and what I begin to write sounds something like: “Hi my name is Laura and today I ate food.”

I would like to remember the moment I decided to start this writing endeavor: in the hammock in my front yard with my 6-week-old daughter on my chest. The echo chamber of thoughts and words was happening in my head but I only decided to get up and actually give this writing thing a go because some stupid bees were hovering around Zip (Zipporah–we call her Zip, Zippy, etc.) and I’m kind of really scared of bees after being stung this summer for the first time since I stuck my finger in a flower as a foolish child. So Hi. Here goes everything…

Quick explanation. I’ve been writing for a couple of years now on Google Docs (very classy) and it was my thought to be writing to the end that it would create a book. But I’m not very good at starting things and tying them up in a pretty bow (finishing what I’ve started)…so I’ve decided to begin this blog by posting the little snippets I’ve written since my now two-year-old daughter was 6 weeks old. A blog feels more manageable because really there is only a start and I don’t have to “finish” it. I’m hoping this is the perfect medium for my writing. I will date these first posts with the original date they were written. We’ll catch up to the present in no time at all, don’t worry. I didn’t write that much in the past two years.
